European Geography

The geography of western Europe...why, Mrs. Hubler, do we need to know this?

Well...having a basic understanding of the geography of Europe will make our studies of the Middle Ages and Renaissance that much more fun. We will have a picture in our minds of where we are and what we're talking about. Additionally...the more we learn about the world...the better prepared we are to take on a global perspective in all that we do...because the world is simply too small to focus our attention on just our little corner...so here we go.

Please use the following websites to complete the assignment before you. Using the list of countries on the whiteboard, please select a country to research. NO duplication please! You will be working in groups of three, however, each group member will be responsible for their own individual 3 - 5 minute presentation on a country in western Europe. The goal is to teach your peers about "your" country in such a way that we can remember, at the very least, the country and it's capital...AND find it on a map...Good luck!

World Travel Guide
Click on your Country in the Map of Europe
Create a mini guide including at least the three following items: Top things to See, Top things to Do, and the climate.

CIA World Fact Book
Select your country from the Pull down menu (the white box select a Country or Location)

Expeditions - Great Maps!
Use these maps to help you find and mark your country on your own map. Remember to record the name of the capital as well.

Use one of the following websites to locate a current news event. Please remember to print it off (copy and paste the article into a word document - DO NOT print the webpage!!) as you will need to turn it in prior to your presentation.

Google News

Online Newspapers

New York Times

Newseum

Have fun! And remember, you only have this class period to complete your research...please work productively! Presentations will begin Thursday afternoon!

Middle Ages Research

Good evening Lords, Ladies, peasants and all...

I apologize for not getting to this earlier. I spent a large chunk of the afternoon at Hood River Middle School's garden (with several other teachers) learning about how we can start a garden at Corbett. It's pretty cool! Don't fear...we're headed there in May...you'll get to see it for yourself.

Ok...to middle ages research. I have found some really interesting websites. Most of them have pretty good links so you can do a lot of exploring. Remember, your task is to choose a topic that you would like to spend the next four weeks researching and learning about...it should be something that really fascinates you about the middle ages. You'll need to look for a specific person or event associated with the topic as well so please keep this in mind as you explore the web.

Without further ado...

I would also like you to explore this website, Fleur-de-Lis, about heraldry. Next week we will make our own coat of arms and family crests! There is so much you could do...it would be nice to have some ideas in mind...

On Monday morning...say "pickle" to Mrs. Hubler.
